Court Grants Reprieve To Texas Death-Row Inmate

AUSTIN (CN) - The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a stay of execution to death-row inmate Derrick Sonnier just 90 minutes before his scheduled lethal injection. He was convicted of killing a Houston woman and her 2-year-old son.

Executions were temporarily halted while the U.S. Supreme Court considered a challenge to lethal injection procedures in Kentucky. The state court ruled to grant the reprieve, despite the Supreme Court's holding that lethal injection, if administered properly, is constitutional.
