Court Allows Adaptive Use In Columbia Gorge Area

SALEM, Ore. (CN) - The Oregon Court of Appeals dismissed a challenge of the Columbia River Gorge Commission's decision to let some historic buildings in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area open for business that's "compatible with their historic character." The court said the adaptive-use plan was based on sound research, and the commission's final order "passes muster."

In a separate ruling, Friends of the Columbia Gorge v. Columbia River Gorge Commission, the appeals court rejected a Multnomah County ordinance meant to implement the revised plan, because it gave the county too much power in deciding whether to allow commercial use only on properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
