Council On Women and Girls

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Obama has ordered the establishment of a White House Council on Women and Girls to coordinate the federal response to issues that particularly impact the lives of women and girls.

Examples of such concerns mentioned in Obama's order include disparity in compensation for comparable work; underrepresentation of women in the sciences, engineering and technology; declining rates of health insurance coverage, overreliance on women for family and childcare, and the global epidemic of violence against women and girls.

The council will be chaired by the Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Liaison and will include the members of the cabinet, certain government agencies and any other government employee or private citizen the council feels would be a able to assist coordinating the council's work.
