LOS ANGELES (CN) - The former mayor of the L.A. suburb of Rosemead was sentenced Monday to 21 months in federal prison for attempting to tamper with a witness and making false statements to the FBI.
John Tran, 38, also must pay $38,000 in restitution, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.
Tran pleaded guilty late last year to taking $38,000 from a developer to help her get construction permits. He tampered with a witness by asking her to lie about it to a federal grand jury, the U.S. attorney said. Then he lied to the FBI.
Rosemead, pop. 54,400, is part of the Los Angeles metroplex, east of Los Angeles.
Tran was elected to its City Council in 2005 and was mayor from 2007 to 2009.
