Corrupt Cop’s Ex-Wife|Accused of Spying on Police

SAN JOSE (CN) - Federal prosecutors accuse the ex-wife of a corrupt police commander of installing spy software on a police officer's cell phone.

Kristin Nyunt, who was married to former Pacific Grove Police Commander John Nyunt, was charged Oct. 17 with two counts of illegal wiretapping and possession of illegal interception devices.

The federal information does not specify whose phone was tapped.

Nyunt, 40, most recently of Monterey, allegedly possessed several spy programs, including Mobistealth, StealthGenie and mSpy.

The CEO of the company that sells StealthGenie was indicted on federal charges in September.

The allegations against Kristin Nyunt are the latest in a wide-ranging scandal involving her and her husband.

Kristin Nyunt pleaded guilty in July to identity theft, computer network fraud, residential burglary and forgery, according to the Monterey County Weekly.

Investigators from the FBI and the Monterey County District Attorney's Office said John Nyunt gave his then-wife access to police databases, which she used to steal dozens of identities.

The victims included John Nyunt's son and other police officers, according to the Monterey County District Attorney.

John Nyunt was sentenced in April to 3 years in prison for his involvement, the Weekly reported.

The police commander knew about his wife's crimes, but told officers not to investigate her. He was arrested in March for allegedly threatening to kill her.

Kristin Nyunt was arrested on identity theft charges in January 2013.

She's due in court on the latest charges on Thursday, Oct. 23.
