Corrupt Cop’s Ex-Wife Admits Spying on Police

SAN JOSE (CN) - The ex-wife of a corrupt police commander pleaded guilty Monday to federal wiretapping charges.

Kristin Nyunt, who was married to former Pacific Grove Police Cmdr. John Nyunt, admitted she installed spy software on the cell phone of a police officer, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Nyunt used spy software such as Mobistealth and StealthGenie to record phone calls, texts, voicemail, email and other sensitive information from 2010 to 2012, prosecutors said.

"In one instance, she was paid money by the husband of a victim to spy on her and intercept her private communications using this software," according to the U.S. attorney's statement.

The software also allowed her to activate the microphone of a cell phone so that conversations near the phone could be recorded.

Nyunt was charged in October with illegal wiretapping and possession of illegal interception devices. The federal information did not specify whose phones were tapped.

Nyunt faces up to 5 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine on each count at her Feb. 23 sentencing.

Nyunt's husband was sentenced in April for his involvement in an identity theft scandal, which also involved Kristin Nyunt. Kristin Nyunt pleaded guilty to charges in that case.
