Cops Pay $50,000 for Taser Assault

COLUMBIA, Mo. (CN) - The Columbia Police Department will pay a 24-year-old man $50,000 to settle allegations of excessive force with a Taser.

In his federal complaint, Cadilac Derrick claimed police assaulted him during a traffic stop on Feb. 24, 2009.

A patrol car dashboard video shows Derrick being subdued with a Taser after he did not respond immediately to a request to leave the car.

Derrick's girlfriend and her 3-year-old child were with him in the car.

Derrick was criminally charged with resisting arrest, but the charge was dismissed.

A police internal affairs investigation found that the officers acted appropriately, the Columbia Tribune reported.
