Cooling-off Period|Sought in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) - Gov. Jerry Brown asked a judge to impose a 60-day cooling-off period to prevent a transit strike in Oakland.

After averting a strike in another Bay Area transit dispute, Brown on Tuesday sought protection from a strike threatened by AC Transit workers, who provide about 180,000 rides a day, including for thousands of public school students.

Brown asked an Alameda County judge for 60 days to work out a deal with defendants Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 192, AFL-CIO; and the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District.

Bus drivers seek better pay and medical benefits, bathroom breaks, and better protection from violence.

In the 4-page request for a temporary restraining order, order to show cause and injunction, Brown claims a strike or lockout would "endanger the public's health, safety or welfare," particularly schoolchildren, the disabled, and people who cannot drive.
