WASHINGTON (CN) - The Drug Enforcement Administration has legitimized doctors' use of sequential prescriptions to allow patients to continue potentially addictive medication for up to 90 days.
The DEA's list of substances that the Government controls due to their addictive nature and potential to be diverted to non-medical uses, schedule II, includes drugssuch asopium, cocaine, oxycodone, morphine and Ritalin. The DEA believes that providing prescriptions that can be filled only after a certain number of days provides enough control to thwart abuse of the drugs, even though allowing refills would be illegal.
