Computer Technicians Say Licensing Rules Violate Their Constitutional Rights

AUSTIN, Texas (CN) - The Texas Private Security Board violates the rights of computer repair technicians by requiring them to obtain private investigator's licenses, three technicians claim in Travis County Court.

Michael Rife, Thane Hayhurst and David Norelid challenge an amendment to the Private Security Act, which threatens criminal penalties of up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine per violation, for performing many simple computer repairs.

They claim the changes threaten their livelihood, as they would have to close shop in order to complete the mandatory three-year apprenticeship or obtain the criminal justice degree required to receive licensing. Plaintiffs are represented by Matthew Miller.
