Composer’s Daughter Sues Eastman School

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (CN) - The daughter of the late composer Wayne Barlow demands $1.5 million from the University of Rochester, claiming its Eastman School of Music lost 12 to 21 of her father's tapes. Barlow was known for his electronic music.

Barlow, who studied with Arnold Schoenberg, was the first person to receive a Ph.D. in musical composition, the Eastman School of Music says in an article about him on its Web site. The school says Barlow died in 1996; his daughter's complaint in Monroe County Court says he died in 2001.

The school's Web site describes Barlow him as a pioneer in electronic music, who founded the Eastman Electronic Music Studio in 1968. He was chairman of the composition department from 1968 until 1973 and dean of graduate studies from 1973-1978.

Joan Barlow Donat says the missing tapes included her father's "lectures, performances and recordings." She is represented by Christopher Ciaccio.
