Community Groups Challenge New|Border Bridge Planned for Detroit

WASHINGTON (CN) - Seven community groups in Detroit say the Federal Highway Administration will needlessly destroy more than 100 acres of homes, churches and businesses to build a new, an unnecessary, border bridge to be known as the Detroit River International Crossing.

Plaintiffs claim that "what is now a cohesive neighborhood will be fractured beyond repair, and what remains of the neighborhood will be completely isolated."

Plaintiffs - Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development, Citizens With Challenges, Detroit Association of Black Organizations, Detroiters for Progress, Mana de Metro Detroit, Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metro Detroit, and Detroit International Bridge Co. - sued the FHA in Federal Court. They want construction of the bridge project enjoined.

They are represented by Anthony Alexis with Mayer Brown.
