Comment Time on CAFE Standards Extended

WASHINGTON (CN) - The public has until Feb. 13 to comment on an extension to emission and fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles in model years 2017-2025 proposed by two agencies.

The Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration had set a deadline of Jan. 30, 2012 when it published the proposed rules last December.

The rules would extend the benchmarks used in the 2012-2016 model years for greenhouse gas emissions and corporate average fuel standards.

The EPA and the NHTS say they received multiple requests for an extension of the comment period. Both agencies noted that the proposal has been available on their websites since Nov. 16, 2011, and that with the extension, the public will have had 90 days to review the documents.

Official public comment periods extend from the date a proposed rule is published in the Federal Register, not from when it is first made available to the public.
