‘Combination’ Vehicle Weight Rating on Hold

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has withdrawn an August direct final rule defining "gross combination weight rating" as the value specified by the commercial motor vehicle manufacturer.

The FMCSA attempted to change the definition because it determined that the rule includes what essentially was "guidance that is difficult for the motor carrier and enforcement communities to use."

Adverse comments, which require a federal agency to go through the usual rulemaking process, pointed out that manufacturers are not required to provide the rating on the certification label along with the gross vehicle weight rating, so it makes it difficult for motor carriers, such as truckers and bus drivers, to have the information.

The FMCSA says it will develop proposed changes to the rating definition for public comment.
