PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - A member of the George Fox University baseball team says he was permanently blinded in one eye from an injury he suffered in a drill called "organized chaos."
Dan Grierson says he was injured during the drill on Feb. 27, 2007, in the gym. The drill involves multiple pitchers and multiple balls in play, including a double-play ball hit to short and a ball hit to the first baseman, who fields it and throws to a pitcher who covers first, who then has to hustle back to the pitcher's mound.
Grierson says the drill was designed "in substantial part" by George Fox's coach, Pat Bailey. He says he was hit in the face by a thrown ball as he ran back from first to the mound. And he says the eye surgery, which was unsuccessful, forced him "to assume and maintain a face-down position for 12 days following the surgery."
Grierson is represented in Multnomah County Court by David Paul with Paul & Sugerman.
