ATLANTA (CN) - About 1,650 Egyptians may lose their jobs because Coca-Cola is "destroying" an Egyptian bottling company, the firm says in Federal Court. Societe Nationale D'Industries Nutritive, a bottler and distributor, claims Coca-Cola is trying to force it out of business.
Societe Nationale distributes Schweppes and Canada Dry beverages in parts of Egypt. It makes Schweppes products principally with concentrate supplied by Atlantic Industries and Coca-Cola Midi, wholly owned subsidiaries of Cola-Cola.
In its federal lawsuit, Societe Nationale claims that Coca-Cola breached contract, through its subsidiaries, by cutting off its supply of concentrate.
The Societe also claims Coca-Cola has pressured other companies to stop supplying it with products such as glass bottles, cans, bottlecaps and other bottling and shipping supplies.
Societe Nationale says its business is being destroyed. It demands $100 million for tortious interference, coercion, duress, malicious injury to business, and unjust enrichment. It is represented by Edward Krugman with Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore.
