Coast Guard Tosses |Seal Island Danger Zone

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Department of Homeland Security, through the U.S. Coast Guard, is cancelling the safety warning regarding unexploded munitions around former practice bombing target, Seal Island.

The Coast Guard cites potential negative economic impact as a reason for cancelling the zone. It also states as a reason that a comprehensive survey of Munitions and Explosives of Concern in the area has not been completed.

The Coast Guard says that since the survey of dangers is incomplete, the agency "is unable to determine if the risk posed warrants permanent establishment of the safety zone," so, the zone will be cancelled. The agency also notes as a reason that there was "limited reporting of Munitions and Explosives of Concern."

The Coast Guard previously had determined that the zone would not be enforced until the survey was complete.
