CLEVELAND (AP) — A federal judge says Cleveland and a civil rights organization have reached a settlement in a lawsuit over the city's rules governing protests and marches during the upcoming Republican National Convention.
A judge on Thursday had ruled the city's protest regulations would unconstitutionally infringe on people's right to freedom of expression. He ordered both sides to negotiate a settlement with another federal judge who would act as mediator.
The second judge on Friday filed an order that said after a long evening of negotiations, the two sides had come to an agreement and would be executing a settlement "expeditiously."
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio sued the city on behalf of two groups planning protests and rallies in Cleveland during the convention and a homeless advocacy organization.
