Clerk & Attorney Guilty in Bribe Scheme

(CN) - A federal jury convicted a former El Paso (Texas) County clerk and an El Paso attorney of participating in a county government bribery scheme. Former El Paso County District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez and attorney Luther Jones were convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud and deprivation of honest services.

Prosecutors say the men conspired to secure a multimillion-dollar document imaging vendor contract between El Paso County and one of Jones' clients. Jones offered Sanchez cash bribes, travel expenses to Las Vegas and gratuities, and campaign contributions to a member of the El Paso County Commissioners Court. In exchange, Sanchez was to support the contract in his official capacity.

Both defendants face to up to 20 years in prison on the fraud charge. No sentencing date has been set.
