Class Sues Dating Service

LOS ANGELES (CN) - A federal class action claims eHarmony, a dating service, claimed to have a "scientifically proven system" to match customers with appropriate partners, but has no such system, and hooked them up with scam artists.

The class claims that eHarmony promised that it "has a scientifically proven system in place which ensures the safety of its members during the matching process and that only compatible and sincere singles seeking long-term relationships are matched. In fact, eHarmony does not have such a system and as a result its members have been matched with scam artists and/or have been paid for services which they did not receive.

"In misrepresenting the services it provides and omitting to disclose that it takes no measures to protect its members from scam artists, eHarmony has perpetuated a massive consumer fraud upon thousands of unsuspecting consumers within the United States who have purchased its services. As of now, eHarmony has neither taken steps to modify its illegal sales practices nor has it taken any other appropriate remedial action."

One named plaintiff says eHarmony hooked her up with a scam artist in Africa.

The class claims that eHarmony promotes itself by saying its "'patented matching technology is based on more than 35 years of empirical and clinical research on what goes into successful relationships, and it brings together singles using a scientifically proven set of compatibility principles.'" This "system" allegedly is based on "29 Dimensions of personality."

Plaintiffs demands damages for four counts of unfair and deceptive trade. They are represented by Lange & Koncius of El Segundo.
