SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A federal class action claims Acer notebook computers lack the memory to run the Microsoft Window Vista Premium program that comes pre-installed on the computers. The class claims the defect leads to freezing, crashing, required rebooting and slow load times.
Most computer technicians and professionals recommend at least 2 GB of Random Access Memory (RAM) to effectively run Vista Premium, the lawsuit claims. Because Acers contain only 1 GB of RAM total, shared between the systems and graphics, the notebooks do not live up to the company's promotions, which tout the computers as both a notebook and a premium operating system.
Consumers have to buy additional memory to fix the problem, the class claims. Also, users can't uninstall Vista Premium "without experiencing other significant difficulties," the suit claims, and Acer refuses to provide alternative operating systems, such as Windows XP.
Plaintiffs demand an injunction, restitution and damages. They are represented by lead attorney Richard Lewis with Hausfeld LLP.
