BOSTON (CN) - A federal class action claims Saab's four-cylinder multi-valve turbocharged engines fail and suffer "total destruction" from engine oil sludge, and Saab won't honor its warranty. The complaint involves Saab 9-5 vehicles from 1999 through 2003, Saab 9-3s from 1999-2002, and Saab 9-3 convertibles from 1999-2003.
The class claims the oil sludge destroys engines, and/or damages them severely. They claim Saab "concealed and continue to conceal evidence of and manifestations of engine oil sludge until the original and extended warranty periods expire." They also claim Saab "imposed unreasonable and unconscionable levels of maintenance documentation for warranty repair".
General Motors also is sued. The class demands restitution and damages for breach of warranty, unfair and deceptive trade and unjust enrichment. It demands damages and an injunction. It wants the injunction to order Saab to inspect and replace as necessary the affected engines' oil pump and oil pump pickup screen, the engine crankshaft, cam and balance shafts, chains, chain tensioners, ball bearings, to clean the engines of oil sludge, and inspect and replace other parts, including the turbo charger system, oil cooler, and catalytic converter.
