Class Claims GM Made Bum Transmissions

MONTREAL (CN) - General Motors made the 2002-2005 Saturn Vue despite testing that indicated its VTi transmissions failed prematurely, a class action claims in Superior Court.

Lead plaintiff Caroline Labrecque says the used 2004 Saturn Vue she bought from a Saturn dealer in March 2007 had continuing oil leak problems, then the transmission failed in November 2008.

She claims the Vue's continuously variable transmission causes the thrust belt to wear out prematurely and GM knew it but released the Vue in 2002 anyway. Saturn Ions made from 2003 to 2004 have the same problems, according to the complaint.

It claims GM has received an unusually high number of warranty claims on the transmission. "There was also a large number of reports of VTi transmission failures from consumer groups, authorized Saturn dealers, general vehicle repair facilities and specialized internet websites," it adds.

Saturn replaced her transmission but Labrecque says she would not have bought the vehicle had she been aware of the problem.

She seeks damages for costs of repairs, loss of the use of the care and loss of resale value. The class is represented by Merchant Law Group.
