Class Actions Claim Airlines Charge Illegal Mexican Tourist Tax

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Airlines are illegally collecting 10 percent"tourist taxes" on citizens of Mexico who buy tickets in the United States for flights to Mexico, Maria Sanchez claims in three class-action complaints in Superior Court.

Represented by Henry Rossbacher in all cases, Sanchez sued Alaska Airlines, Mexicana airlines, andAeroMexico. She claims Alaska Airlines, for example, charged her $22 tourist tax on a $215 ticket to Guadalajara. She says Mexican citizens are exempt from the tourist tax, which varies depending upon the currency exchange ratio. She demands restitution, compensation and costs.
