Class Action Claims GM Sold Saturns With Bad Transmissions

SACRAMENTO (CN) - General Motors made Saturns with defective transmissions from 2002 to 2004 and sold them while concealing the defects from consumers, according to a federal class-action complaint.

Plaintiffs claim Saturn and GM knew in 2002 that the Saturn Vti transmissions failed, disabling the car, but they sold them anyway, and either refused to fix them, swapped them for another defective Vti tranny, or tried to get the victimized consumer to trade in the car for less than true value. Some owners of defective Saturn Vues have had to have their transmissions fixed three or more times, the complaint states. It claims the continuously variable transmission and its thrust belt are underpowered. "As a result the thrust belt slips, and the resulting friction between the thrust belt and the pulleys causes the belt to wart until it prematurely fails." Plaintiffs demand damages for fraud, unjust enrichment and breach of warranty. They are represented by Kershaw Cutter & Ratinoff. See complaint.
