City Will Pay $25K To Settle Cop’s Case

SMITHTON, Ill. - The Village of Smithron will pay $25,000 to settle a lawsuit from a police officer who claimed the mayor stuck his hand down her pants. Carol Davis will get $25,000 and the village and mayor will not admit fault.

Davis sued Smithton in federal court in November 2006, claiming it failed to prevent her sexual harassment from Mayor Lloyd Bush. Davis said Bush used sexually charged language, stuck his hand down her pants and offered her a full-time position with the police department if she would show him her breasts.

Davis was eventually hired full-time. Smithton is 20 miles southeast of St. Louis and had five full-time and 13 part-time officers in 2007.

Attorneys representing Smithton and its insurance company announced the settlement.
