Citizens Sue Town To Fight Iron Smelter

CRYSTAL CITY, Mo. - Residents who oppose a proposal for an iron ore smelter have sued Crystal City in Jefferson County Court, citing environmental concerns and accusing city officials of violating Missouri Sunshine Law in negotiations with plant officials.

Concerned Citizens for Crystal City seeks a restraining order to prevent Crystal City from leasing the property to Wings Iron Ore Co., to build and operate the proposed smelter.

The plaintiffs accuse city officials of having secret talks with Wings owner James Kennedy. Those talks should have been held in public and other opinions for the land should have been sought, the suit states.

Plaintiffs claim they will be hurt by the smelter's sights, smells and sounds, which would be built on a property that has been vacant since 1990.

Concerned Citizens for Crystal City includes William McKenna, a former state senator and former chairman of the Missouri Highway Commission.

The City of Crystal City, its City Council, Mayor Tom Schilly, City Clerk Debbie Johns and Building Commissioner Bob French were named as defendants. Crystal City is 35 miles south of St. Louis.
