Circuit Denies Injunction Against Arizona Law

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - The 9th Circuit turned down a bid by businesses and immigration-rights advocates to block a controversial Arizona law that shuts down businesses for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. The three-judge panel ruled that opponents of the measure failed to show an adequate need for delaying its enforcement.

The law places businesses on probation for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants and revokes their business licenses. It went into effect Jan. 1, but county prosecutors agreed not to file any cases until March 1 in order for the courts to decide whether to issue the injunction.
