WASHINGTON (CN) - Judicial Watch sued the CIA in Federal Court, demanding a copy of its inspector general's report on the Watergate scandal.
The watchdog says the CIA missed its deadline to respond to its Dec. 17, 2015 FOIA request for "A copy of the CIA Inspector General [report] on the Watergate Hotel break-in of 1972 and subsequent political scandal." (Brackets in complaint.)
The bungled burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel, and the bungled cover-up, led to President Richard Nixon's impeachment and resignation. The burglars were retrieving listening devices the Nixon administration had installed at the Democratic Committee headquarters. Sixty-nine people were indicted in the ensuing scandal and 25 of them served time in prison. President Jerry Ford pardoned Nixon.
Judicial Watch asks the court to order the CIA to produce the records or at least a Vaughn index, indicating what documents it intends to withhold and the reasons for the denial.
The group is represented by house attorney Michael Bekesha.
The CIA has not returned an email seeking comment.
