Church School Allegedly Barred Woman Ref

KANSAS - Kansas high school officials are investigating reports that a Catholic high school near Topeka refused to let a woman referee a basketball game because doing so would put a woman in authority over its boys, a religious no-no. St. Mary's Academy refused to let Michelle Campbell call the game on Feb. 2, The Associated Press reported, and two male referees walked off the court to support her.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association told the AP it is considering whether to take action against St. Mary's. An Association official told the AP that if it finds that St. Mary's has a policy of prohibiting women from calling boys games, it could boot St. Mary's from its approved list of more than 300 member schools.

St. Mary's is run by the Society of St. Pius X. The private school is about 25 miles northwest of Topeka.
