Church Pays $12.6 Million For Sex Abuse

CHICAGO (CN) - The Archdiocese of Chicago agreed to pay more than $12.6 million to settle 16 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by priests. Fourteen of the cases involve 10 priests and two involve the Rev. Daniel J. McCormick, who pleaded guilty in 2007 to abusing five children.

The Archdiocese of Chicago now has settled four of the five suits involving McCormick and has paid $65 million over three decades to settle approximately 250 sex abuse suits.

Chancellor Jimmy Lago told The Associated Press that mediation continues in a couple dozen more cases. "My hope is that these settlements will help the survivors and their families begin to heal and move forward," Cardinal Francis George said in a statement.
