Chiropractor Faces a 10-Year Stretch

LOS ANGELES (CN) – The second-highest Medicare bidder for chiropractics in California faces up to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to health-care fraud.
Houshang Pavehzadeh aka Danny Paveh, 41, owner of Sylmar Physician Medical Group, a storefront chiropractic clinic in a strip mall, defrauded Medicare of more than $1 million by billing for patients he never treated from 2005 to 2012, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Pavehzadeh admitted that he billed Medicare for $1.7 in false claims, for which he received more than $1 million. He also admitted, in his plea, that “to conceal his fraud from Medicare auditors, he staged an early-morning car jacking outside his office and falsely reported to the Los Angeles Police Department that his patient files had been stolen,” prosecutors said in a statement.
In addition to prison time, Pavehzadeh could be fined up to $250,000 at his Jan. 14, 2014 sentencing.
