A group of older Chinese women bet their pennies in the card game Big Two outside the Alpine Recreation Center in Los Angeles’ Chinatown neighborhood. The women, who collected their chairs from nearby side streets, are working to preserve the few spaces they have left to socialize as rising costs push businesses and residents out of the community.
