WASHINGTON (CN) - In his year-end report, the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court urged Congress to raise the annual pay of judges who "year after year have discharged their important duties for steadily eroding real pay."
The proposed legislation would boost federal judges' annual pay from $165,200 to $233,500, while federal appeals court judges would make $247,500 instead of $175,100. The eight associate justices of the Supreme Court would get a raise from $203,000 to $286,900, and Chief Justice John Roberts' salary would go up from $212,100 to $299,800.
A bill in the Senate Judiciary Committee proposes higher pay hikes, the Associated Press reports, and would increase the pay of federal judges to $247,800, the income of appeals court judges to $262,700, associate justices' salary to $304,000 and Roberts' pay to $318,200.
