CHICAGO (CN) - A Chicago school employee embezzled $524,000 before he was found dead in Tijuana, the Board of Education claims in a lawsuit against his estate.
The Chicago Board of Education sued the Estate of Roberto Tirado, through his estate's representative James A. Vega, in Cook County Court.
Tirado was a technology coordinator at Lake View High School on North Ashland Avenue, from 1001 to 2011.
During that time, the board claims, he swiped $419,747 through false purchase orders and another $114,747 in false reimbursement on his American Express card.
The board began investigating him in July 2011 and he was found dead in Tijuana on Jan. 12, 2012, according to the lawsuit.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Tirado choked to death, apparently on food, in Mexico.
The Board of Ed wants the $419,747, plus treble damages, with interest.
It is represented by its assistant general counsel Matthew Walters.
