Chicago Pays $6.5M for Cop-Caused Death

CHICAGO (CN) - Chicago will pay $6.5 million to the family of an 8-year-old boy who died after being run over by an unmarked police car in 2004.

Gregory Jones and his niece, Datondra Mitchell who was 11 at the time, were hit by the police car as they crossed a street. Mitchell was injured and will share in the settlement.

Police officials said the officers were chasing armed suspects.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Hoyle told The Associated Press that the city due to questions about the officers' story.

The Jones estate will get $5.9 million and Mitchell will get $590,000 under the settlement.
