Chicago Pays $20 Million For Police Tortures

CHICAGO (CN) - The City of Chicago will pay $20 million to settle lawsuits from four Death Row inmates who say Chicago police officers tortured them to gain wrongful convictions.

Aaron Patterson, Leroy Orange, Stanley Howard and Madison Hobley sued Chicago police, who have been accused in these and numerous other lawsuits of torturing and abusing dozens of black citizens. Orange's lawyer, Flint Taylor, told The Associated Press that additional steps are needed, including hearings for 30 black men imprisoned after being tortured into confessing to crimes they didn't commit. Patterson, Orange, Howard and Hobley were spared in January 2003, when former Gov. George Ryan commuted the sentences of every Death Row inmate in the state.
