Chevron Gets Translation of $18.2B Ecuador Verdict

Chevron released a translation of last week's ruling from the court in Lago Agrio, Ecuador, on Friday morning. As Courthouse News has previously reported, the company says the judgment compels it to pay $18.2 billion in damages, or about $9.5 billion if it issues a "public apology" within the next few days.

The 188-page translation was submitted to U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan federal court, who is considering whether to grant Chevron an injunction that would block enforcement of the verdict. Chevron says the verdict is unenforceable and the product of a fraud in the Ecuadorean judiciary.

A spokeswoman for the Ecuadorean plaintiffs in the case says their own translation is pending and that her team will come forward if they notice differences in the translations.
