Champerty

The Minnesota Supreme Court abolished the state’s common law prohibition against champerty, in which the owner of a claim and a party unrelated to the lawsuit but who supports it agree to divide litigation proceeds. Modern rules of professional responsibility and civil procedures “address the abuses of the legal process that necessitated” the prohibition.
