Champ Says Victor Conte Defamed Him

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - Boxer Shane Mosley says BALCO labs founder Victor Conte defamed him by accusing him of knowingly using steroids. Mosley says in his federal complaint that his trainer, Darryl Hudson, introduced him to Conte in July 2003, that Conte took a blood sample and "recommended to Mosley a regimen of products ... (to) help him with his endurance." He says Conte and Hudson assured him "that all of the products recommended by Conte were entirely legal and appropriate."

The complaint continues: "In July 2005, Conte pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to distribute steroids. In October 2005, Conte was sentenced to four months imprisonment and four months house arrest. On or about March 30, 2008, Conte began publicizing the fact that he was going to publish a book about his life as a peddler of steroids. As part of this publicity campaign to maximize sales of his future book, Conte made knowingly false claims about Mosley's use of Balco products."

Represented by Long & Levit, Mosley seeks punitive damages.
