Chamber Of Commerce Sues Governor

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (CN) - Gov. Rod Blagojevich's plan for a multimillion-dollar health care program expansion without legislative approval is unconstitutional, the state's Chamber of Commerce and other businesses claims in Sangamon County Court. Blagojevich wants to add 147,000 parents and caretakers to the Family Care insurance program, though a bipartisan legislative committee rejected the proposal in November.

Blagojevich claims the committee lacks constitutional authority to block the $43 million expansion of the program.

The Chamber of Commerce sued the State of Illinois, Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services Director Barry Maram and state Comptroller Daniel Hynes, because Maram and Hynes would be in charge of carrying out Blagojevich's plan. The coalition wants a judge to stop the spending, claiming that Illinois citizens may sign up for services that are not delivered and that hospitals may not receive compensation for medical services.
