GAINESVILLE, GA. (CN) - A high school fired a paraprofessional after he complained that a substitute teacher wiped ashes off his daughter's forehead on Ash Wednesday, the man claims in Federal Court.
Kevin Callahan claims that his daughter, a student at White County High School, where he worked, wore ashes on the important Catholic holiday. He claims the teacher who wiped them off also "made offensive statements about the Catholic faith to (his) daughter in front of her classmates."
Callahan claims the White County School District's response to his complaints "was wholly unsatisfactory, dilatory, and nonresponsive." He says he was fired after got the Catholic League involved.
Callahan demands lost wages and damages for discrimination. He is represented by Patrick Moore with Weinberg, Wheeler, Hudgins, Gunn & Dial.
