The foreign nationals — hailing from Burma, Canada, Iran, Nigeria, Syria, Tanzania and Venezuela — sued to challenge the Trump-era proclamations that treat nationality from these countries as a negative factor when considering immigrant benefit applications. Their applications must be adjudicated within 30 days.

ICE must release Pakistani detainee
ALEXANDRIA, La. — A federal court in Louisiana granted habeas relief to a Pakistani citizen who has been detained by ICE for 635 days, or nearly one year and nine months. The U.S. has been unable to find a third country to take him; the United Arab Emirates declined, while Saudi Arabia, the People’s Republic of China, Kosovo and Moldavia have not responded. The government “has not even started the process of attempting to remove” him to an third country, according to the magistrate’s report, “and they do not state how long it will take after the process begins. Yet, they still detain him.” He must be immediately released without bond and his family or emergency contact will be notified.
