CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (CN) - In an effort to boost declining profits, state riverboat casinos are hoping to offer free drinks to patrons. The casinos, through a bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Dave Syverson, have asked the Illinois Legislature to approve the giveaway.
Supporters say current rules aren't clear on whether casinos can give away free drinks and that the casinos need something to boost business, which they blame on a statewide smoking ban that started last year. But Anita Bedell of the United Church Action on Alcohol Problems told the Associated Press that giving away free alcohol will cause more problems, including increased gambling.
