Cartel Chief Sentenced to 31 Years

MANHATTAN (CN) - A Guatemalan man whom prosecutors call "one of the world's most significant drug kingpins" was sentenced on Friday to 31 years in federal prison. A jury convicted Jorge Mario Paredes Cordova in November 2009 of conspiring with Colombian and Mexican cartels to ship tons of cocaine to the United States.

Paredes protected the shipments by bribing officials in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
