‘Credible threat’ leads to lockdown of California Capitol

The California Highway Patrol notified lawmakers of the threat Thursday morning.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) — The California State Capitol building in Sacramento was temporarily evacuated Thursday morning because of a "credible threat."

The threat was reportedly linked to the same individual who allegedly shot at a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Roseville on Wednesday night. The same person was also linked to a shooting in Citrus Heights earlier Wednesday. Both Roseville and Citrus Heights are in the Sacramento area.

The suspect in those shootings is still at large and considered armed and dangerous.

The California Highway Patrol, which serves as the state police, notified the state Senate of the threat Thursday morning. The floor session was briefly delayed.

“The California Highway Patrol has notified the Senate of a threat they consider to be credible involving the Capitol,” Senate Secretary Erika Contreras said in an email to senators and Senate staff. “The CHP and security partners are present in higher numbers in the Capitol area, and are alert of the situation.”

She instructed Senate staff who hadn't reported for work yet to remain at home and those already in the building to remain in their offices. A floor session Thursday morning was moved to an adjacent building on O Street.

Operations appeared to be resuming by 10 a.m.

"We are all safe in the Capitol," Assemblymember Isaac Bryan tweeted a little after 10. "There is no active shooter, but there was a credible threat."
