California Savages Equilon & Shell

OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) - Equilon and Shell Oil have violated environmental and health and safety laws for more than a decade in Alameda County, the state says in a lawsuit that begins with 54 specific allegations. The attorney general says the oil companies tampered with and disabled leak detection devices and alarms, failed to get permits, failed to file and update chemical inventory, had an "incomplete or absent evacuation plan," stored hazardous waste in unsafe and unclosed containers, failed to establish emergency response procedures, dumped waste illegally - and on and on.

Attorney General Jerry Brown seeks civil penalties, an injunction and costs, in Alameda County Court.
