California parents challenge student gender identity law

A group of parents and the city of Huntington Beach are asking a federal court to block a California law preventing schools from enacting policies that require staff to disclose a student’s gender identity, sexual orientation or gender expression to any other person without permission from the student. The city and parents argue that a child experiencing gender dysphoria “often has other mental health issues” and that the law violates constitutional parental rights allowing parents the right to refuse medical treatment, such as social transitioning to treat gender dysphoria.
