A budget message by California's chief justice says an earlier deal to trim $200 million from the budget for the courts should stand as the final number while criminal courts will get some new money as a result of new probation responsibilities and court security funds will get a bump based on inflation. The governor's "May Revise" of the budget situation shows that another $10.8 billion is needed to erase California's budget deficit and build a small reserve.
The governor's plan, said Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, said calls for continuation of earlier tax increases, but at a reduced level. The governor's announced this week a $6.6 billion surge in tax income beyond what was expected, strongly suggesting an economic upswing.
The governor's plan provides $41 million in new money for criminal courts as a result of additional responsibilities in parole revocation, an additional $11 million for court security tied to inflation and an additional $2.6 million for public defenders, said the chief in her email message to judges and court officials.
