Calif. Dems Pick Rendon|as Assembly Speaker

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) - Both houses of the California Legislature will be led by Latinos for the first time ever, after Assembly Democrats elected Assemblyman Anthony Rendon to replace Speaker Toni Atkins.

Rendon, D-Lynwood, replaces Atkins, D-San Diego, who will be termed out in 2016. Atkins has held the speakership since March 2014.

First elected in 2012, Rendon can serve in the Assembly until 2024.

Senate president Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, replaced former state Sen. Darrell Steinberg in October 2014 and became the first Latino to hold that position in over 130 years.
